What was the Earth like before God formed it? Better yet, what are you and I like before we receive God’s free gift of salvation? The answers to both questions are the same. The earth was without form, void, dark, and filled with water. Similarly, you and I are the same before we encounter God’s saving grace through his Son. We are without purpose, empty or void, and filled with darkness. Does it shock you to hear that? Keep reading and I’ll explain later.
The book of Genesis is an amazing account of God’s creation. To think that God could just speak and things appear. What power! All I can say is “wow!” If only one could go back in time and witness the formation of something out of nothing. It’s incredible! God spoke all of creation into existence.
Day 1 The first day God created Light. He divided the light from the darkness. This is talking of a 24 hour day, clearly evident by the mention of evening and morning.
Day 2, God created the sky. He divided the waters above from the waters beneath.
Day 3, God said, “Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together into one place and let the dry land appear.”(Genesis 1:9) Grass, herb yielding seed and the fruit trees appeared.
Day 4, God created lights in the sky. Why? The lights divided the day from the night; created for signs and seasons; were to be lights in the heavens and give light on the earth. The greater light was to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. He created the stars also. Pretty cool stuff! Let me see you do that.
Day 5, God created the innumerable sea creatures. No aquarium needed folks. God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded according to their kind. Genesis 1:21
Day 6, God created the land animals. Now, the next thing God is about to do here is create man. I almost want to stop God here and say, “NO!” Don’t do it God! Don’t create man!!! He’s going to ruin everything. You’ll have to pay the price for it. It’s too much. The cost is too great! Please, God think this over won’t you? Then again, how else would we be here to experience this awe inspiring God of ours. So God created man and woman. Man is unlike any of God’s creation in that man was made in the likeness of God. God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness.”(Geneses 1:26) Man was also given dominion over the earth. Boy, we sure messed up there!
God blessed the living creatures He had made and said be fruitful and multiply. God finished his work on the seventh day and rested.
So what are we supposed to learn from Genesis chapter 1? The book of Genesis is the foundation for the rest of the Bible. “Genesis should be foundational to every human society. If those truths are ignored, distorted or rejected, consequences will occur.” (Answers to Genesis) Key doctrines of the Bible are taught in Genesis. The rest of the Bible stands or falls on the this book. No wonder it is attacked so strongly.
I mentioned earlier that we are also without purpose, empty, and filled with darkness before we accept God’s gift of salvation. I would like to explain what I mean by that now. We are without purpose because we haven’t yet met the one that gives our life meaning. God created us for a reason. If we don’t even know God then how will we know the reason we exist? We first have to meet him. How do we do that? The Bible says in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” We are all sinners; we have all broken God’s laws. It’s his world, his rules. Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” The just payment of our sin is death. Death is eternal separation from God in a place called hell. God doesn’t want you to go to hell so he made a way for you to escape hell. He sent his Son, Jesus Christ to be punished in your place. God poured out his wrath on his own Son. He loved you that much! It says in I Corinthians 15: 3,4 “…that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” What must you do now? You have just heard the truth. What are you going to do about it? The Bible says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.” Acts 16:31 You must acknowledge the truth about who Jesus is and what he came to do. You must believe this to be true. Then you are to repent or turn away from doing wrong and do what God wants you to do. Make him your Lord. Obey him and do good. This must be the sincere desire of your heart. Then you will no longer be empty and filled with darkness. You will have the light of life . The Holy Spirit will come and live in your spirit. No more darkness. Darkness is symbolic in the Bible as evil, wickedness, lack of direction, sinful, and having to do with the kingdom of Satan. You have been delivered or rescued out of the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of His dear Son. Wow! God just keeps doing amazing things. Now you have a new purpose! To bring God glory.
So my friends I hope this has been a help to you. I am still in awe of God. He just gets more and more beautiful the longer I know Him. I hope you know him. God Bless.
